The CBU-59 APAM is a cluster bomb designed to engage infantry, as well as unfortified and lightly armored targets. The APAM was developed in the 1970s as a modernized variant of the Mk.20 Rockeye bomb. The CBU-59 single bomb cluster was created based on the Mk.20 Rockeye.
Design and Composition
The APAM utilizes 717 small-caliber BLU-77 submunitions as its destructive elements. In addition to armor-piercing charges, the cluster contains anti-personnel fragmentation and incendiary charges, making it a versatile munition against various threats.
Combat Deployment
During the Persian Gulf War, one hundred eighty-six CBU-59 APAM cluster bombs were deployed. This usage highlights its role in modern conflicts for area denial and target saturation.
