Unmanned delivery drones are experiencing increasing development in the realm of cargo transportation. The vast majority of these are small in size, designed for non-oversized packages. In early 2019, San Francisco-based company Elroy Air unveiled the concept for its Chaparral cargo UAV.
A distinctive feature of the Chaparral drone is its impressive payload capacity. The device is capable of carrying 100 to 220 kg of cargo in a single trip, covering distances of up to 500 km. The development team has been working on the Chaparral since 2017, refining its design and functionality.
Innovative Design and Capabilities
The drone is equipped with seven propellers: six engines allow the Chaparral to take off and land vertically, eliminating the need for runways or airports. An additional rotor, attached to the tail section, enables it to achieve high speeds. Due to its size, the Chaparral requires a landing zone equivalent to six parking spaces.
According to Elroy Air’s official website, the Chaparral will not even require an electric charging station thanks to its “hybrid electric propulsion system.” The aircraft is powered by a battery installed near the nose of the catamaran-like drone.
Cargo Handling and Applications
The Chaparral itself has no internal space for cargo. Instead, the UAV automatically attaches a pre-loaded special container, orienting itself via beacons, and flies directly to the address. This method significantly speeds up order processing, optimizing logistical efficiency.
The use of this cargo drone is not limited to simple delivery routes. The Chaparral can be deployed for disaster response and climate catastrophes, providing rapid operational assistance during long-range military missions, and transporting humanitarian aid. Engineers highlight its suitability for both humanitarian missions (delivery of blood, medications) and heavy commercial work.
Future Outlook and Logistics
While operating such a heavy apparatus for “last-mile” deliveries is deemed impractical, the Chaparral is expected to become a crucial mid-chain link in the logistics network. For instance, it could effortlessly transport a batch of smartphones from a port to a distribution center, bypassing road traffic. A full cycle of tests for the aircraft was scheduled for 2019, with full operation planned between 2020 and 2023.
