Bendix K

In 1944, Vincent Bendix founded the small helicopter manufacturing company Bendix Helicopters, later renamed Helicopters Inc. Designer Martin Jensen developed two similar projects for the company: the single-seat Bendix K and the four-seat Bendix J.

Both helicopters utilized a coaxial design featuring two two-bladed, contra-rotating coaxial rotors. This innovative configuration aimed to provide enhanced stability and control in flight.

Development and Maiden Flight

Two prototypes of the Bendix K helicopter were manufactured in 1946. The first prototype, bearing the registration NX41817, took to the air on June 30, 1945. This maiden flight marked a significant step in rotary-wing aviation.

Testing and Enhancements

During its testing phase, the Bendix K’s design continued to evolve. As a result of these evaluations, the aircraft received an enclosed cabin, enhancing pilot comfort and safety and refining its final design.
