Boland Biplane

In 1908, Frank and Joseph Boland founded the Boland Aeroplane & Motor Co. The company’s first aircraft was designed by Frank Boland in 1911, based on the 1909 Green aircraft.
The airplane was a single-seat biplane featuring a “tailless” aerodynamic configuration. Its power plant was a proprietary eight-cylinder V-engine with a two-bladed propeller. This engine developed 60 hp (45 kW) and was water-cooled.
Pioneering Design and Development
In the same year, another biplane was built, but this one followed a classic design. The following year, the aircraft was further refined, becoming a two-seater with an enclosed gondola. Also in 1912, Frank Boland embarked on a tour of Latin America in the 1911 biplane.
On September 29, Boland made a historic flight over the city of Caracas in his biplane, marking the first flight in Venezuela’s history. This pioneering achievement left a lasting mark on aviation in the region.
Acquisition and New Identity
In 1914, Inglis M. Uppercu acquired Boland Aeroplane and transformed the company into the Aeromarine Plane and Motor Company. A slightly modified 1912 Boland biplane was subsequently offered to buyers under the new designation, Aeromarine Model B, continuing its legacy of innovative aviation.
