Brokaw Bullet (BJ-520)

In the early 1970s, Burgon F. Brokaw and Ernest R. Jones founded Brokaw Aviation Inc. in Leesburg, Florida. The company’s sole project was the Brokaw Bullet (or BJ-520), a light multi-purpose aircraft.

Development and First Flight

The prototype (N520BJ) made its maiden flight on November 18, 1972. This two-seater, cantilever low-wing monoplane was equipped with a six-cylinder Continental TSIO-520B piston engine, delivering 310 hp (230 kW) with a three-bladed propeller.

Alternative power plants were subsequently used. These included a turbocharged six-cylinder Lycoming TSIO-541-E1A4 piston engine, generating 380 hp (280 kW), and later a Garrett TPE331-25AA turboprop engine, rated at 475 hp (354 kW).

Marketing Model and Legacy

The Brokaw Bullet aircraft was offered to customers as a complete set of blueprints for self-assembly. Data on the total number of aircraft built is unavailable.

The prototype aircraft is now exhibited at the Sun ‘n Fun aviation museum in Lakeland, Florida.
