BZK-005

The Chinese BZK-005 UAV was developed in the early 2000s by the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in collaboration with the Harbin Aviation Industrial Group (HAIG). It was designed as a medium/high-altitude, long-range reconnaissance aircraft, intended for extended surveillance missions.

The first information, a video, about the BZK-005 reconnaissance UAV was presented at the Zhuhai exhibition in 2006. However, the aircraft was publicly demonstrated for the first time at a military parade in Beijing on September 3, 2015, marking its official debut to a global audience.

Advanced Design and Capabilities

The BZK-005 is designed with a twin-boom configuration, featuring a piston engine with a three-bladed pusher propeller mounted at the rear of the fuselage. It has a V-shaped tail and a SATCOM antenna that provides direct data transmission over thousands of kilometers, facilitating long-range operations.

It is equipped with FLIR/CCD cameras on a small turret, which can be used for photo reconnaissance as needed. Its large wingspan and extensive use of composite materials contribute to increasing its range and service ceiling, while also reducing its radar cross-section (RCS).

Performance Specifications

With a maximum takeoff weight of 1250 kg and a payload capacity of 150 kg, the BZK-005 demonstrates impressive operational capabilities. It achieves a service ceiling of 8000 meters and a remarkable flight endurance of 40 hours, covering a range of up to 2400 km.

Operational History and Deployments

The BZK-005 is in service with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). In 2013, one unit flew near the Senkaku Islands, an area of territorial dispute between China and Japan, prompting F-15J fighters from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force to scramble for interception.

Subsequently, in the summer of 2016, BZK-005 aircraft were spotted on the artificial Woody Island in the South China Sea. These deployments underscore its strategic role in China’s surveillance operations.
