C-21 Learjet
The C-21 Learjet is a tactical military transport aircraft, developed by the American firm Learjet Inc., based on the civilian passenger aircraft Learjet 35. Serial production commenced in 1974. The U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard acquired 80 and four aircraft, respectively, of the latest variant designated C-21A.
These C-21A aircraft are primarily used for medical evacuation, staff transport, and VIP missions. Additionally, the air forces of several other nations procured these aircraft for liaison duties, showcasing their diverse utility beyond initial U.S. military roles.
Military Variants and Specialized Roles
Learjet also developed a range of special modifications of the aircraft for military use. The EC-35A variant was designed for electronic warfare (EW) and as a training aircraft for EW specialists.
The PC-35A served as a maritime patrol aircraft, outfitted with a search radar featuring an antenna housed in a belly fairing, a high-resolution TV system, a forward-looking IR system, a linear IR scanner, an EW complex, and a magnetometer. It also had two underwing hardpoints, one under each wing, capable of carrying a payload of up to 454 kg.
Further specialized versions included the RC-35A, a reconnaissance variant equipped with special LOROP (LOng-Range Oblique Photography) cameras, side-looking radar, and other specialized equipment. The UC-35A was a multipurpose variant that could, among other things, be used as a target tug, demonstrating the platform’s adaptability.
International Operators
C-21 Learjet aircraft were supplied to a wide array of countries, including Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Finland, Germany, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, China, Switzerland, and Japan. This broad international adoption underscores the aircraft’s global appeal and effectiveness in various military capacities.
