In 1935, engineer Marcel Riffard, chief designer at Société des Avions Caudron, developed a modernized version of the C.530 racing and sports aircraft, designated C.660 Rafale. This new aircraft stood out from its predecessor with a redesigned wing featuring reduced area and a more powerful engine, enhancing its performance for competitive events.

Development and Design

The C.660 was a two-seater, wooden low-wing monoplane, embodying advanced aerodynamics for its time. It was powered by a six-cylinder Renault 4Pei engine, delivering 180 horsepower (134 kW), which provided the necessary thrust for its racing aspirations.

Performance and Legacy

Three C.530 aircraft were converted into this new C.660 variant, showcasing the firm’s adaptability and engineering prowess. Notably, one of these modified aircraft achieved a significant victory, winning the prestigious Angers competition in 1935, cementing the Rafale’s reputation.
