Introduction to the Citation V
The prototype of the next Citation S/II variant took to the air on August 18, 1987. Designated as the Cessna Model 560 Citation V, this aircraft featured JT15D-5A engines and an extended fuselage. Deliveries of production aircraft began in April 1989, and military operators of the Citation V included the Royal Moroccan Air Force, the Seychelles People’s Defence Force, and the South African military organization Venda Defence Force.
Evolution and Military Service
A further development of the Citation V was the Citation V Ultra, which made its first flight in August 1987. It was equipped with a digital autopilot, an EFI5 electronic flight information system, and JT15D-5D turbofan engines with 13.55 kN of thrust each. Military operators of this aircraft included the Spanish Air Force, the U.S. Army (as the UC-35A medium-range transport aircraft), and the U.S. Marine Corps (UC-35C).
Created in 1997, the Citation Excel aircraft represents a combination of the Citation Ultra’s wing and empennage with a shortened Citation X fuselage. The enhanced Citation Ultra Encore variant was announced in 1998 and received the designation UC-35B in the U.S. Army. The first aircraft was delivered in 2000, but already under the designation Citation Encore.
Citation Encore Innovations
Certification of the Citation Ultra Encore was completed in late 1999, with the first production aircraft released in mid-2000. The Cessna 560 Ultra Encore now occupies the production lines of the Cessna Citation V Ultra. The standard configuration cost of the aircraft is 6.875 million dollars.
The main innovations of the aircraft include new, more efficient, and economical Pratt & Whitney PW535A turbofan engines, which reduce fuel consumption by 15 percent compared to the JT15D-5D engines. It also features enlarged fuel tanks, an improved passenger cabin interior, modernized avionics (including the Honeywell Primus 1000 system), and a new ice removal system.
