Comp Air 6.2

Comp Air, based in Florida, has introduced a do-it-yourself assembly aircraft, whose structure is entirely made of composite materials. Reportedly, the kit can include either a piston engine (Lycoming IO-540 with 350 hp) or a turboprop engine (up to 750 hp) as an option. Pressurization system is also included among the options.

Ease of Assembly and Design

The Comp Air 6.2, according to the company, will be easy to assemble. The time from the start of the process to aircraft taxiing is no more than 4 weeks. The machine is a six-seater high-wing aircraft with fixed landing gear, which can be equipped with retractable “wheels” or floats. The wing design is based on a modified NACA 64212 profile.

The maximum takeoff weight of the Comp Air 6.2, with an empty weight of 997 kg, will be 4000 pounds (1812 kg). Fuel system volume for kerosene and gasoline will differ: 180 and 100 gallons, respectively. According to preliminary calculations, cruising speed with a 300 hp engine at sea level will be 181 knots (335 km/h), and at an altitude of 6,200 feet (1890 m), it will be 163 knots (301 km/h). The projected range of the Comp Air 6.2 is 850 miles (1574 km), and stall speed is 61 knots (113 km/h). The cost of an unpainted airframe without engine, avionics, battery, propeller, and interior trim is set at $125,000.

Pricing and Availability

According to Comp Air, the company is ready for production and delivery of the aircraft, which will be certified in the experimental category, both as a kit and in assembled form. A full prototype will appear in 10 months, provided the company secures additional funding of at least $500k. The machine will be offered for multi-purpose utility application and private businessmen. According to Comp Air’s own data, over its 20 years of existence, it has supplied customers with about 400 kits and partially assembled aircraft of nine different models. This fleet has accumulated a total of at least 250,000 flight hours to date.
