In the mid-1930s, American engineer Robert L. Hall founded Springfield Aircraft Inc. in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1932, the company built a light aircraft named the Hall Bulldog, often also referred to as the Hall-Springfield Bulldog.

Design and Specifications

It was a single-seat, strut-braced high-wing monoplane with a gull wing, powered by a 550 hp Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine. It was fitted with a Hamilton Standard two-bladed propeller.

Racing History

Businessman Marion Guggenheim proposed that Hall convert the aircraft into a racer to compete in the National Air Races. The modified Bulldog participated, finishing sixth with an average speed of 215.57 miles per hour (347 km/h).

It was believed that an experimental propeller prevented the engine from delivering its full power.
