Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.8

Introduction to the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.8
Designated as the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.8, a two-seater reconnaissance biplane was engineered, powered by an 80 hp Gnome rotary engine. The prototype’s maiden flight occurred on August 20, 1913. The B.E.8 aircraft featured fixed landing gear with a tail skid and a pair of skids mounted in front of the main landing gear legs to reduce the possibility of nosing over on unprepared airfields.
The most unusual feature of the two prototypes built in Farnborough was a single long cockpit accommodating both crew members. However, serial production B.E.8 aircraft, built under subcontract, had two separate cockpits. A total of 24 aircraft were produced, with 11 by Vickers, 7 by Coventry Ordnance Works, and 6 by the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company.
Variants and Later Production
The B.E.8a variant, introduced in 1915, featured new wings equipped with ailerons and a modified tail unit. Forty-two such machines were built, with 21 each at the Vickers and Coventry Ordnance Works factories. One experimental B.E.8a was successfully tested with a powerful 120 hp nine-cylinder R.A.F.2 radial engine.
The B.E.8 in World War I
After the outbreak of World War I, the sole B.E.8 in the 3rd Squadron saw combat operations in France, but it suffered a severe accident after only three days. The subsequent six aircraft, nicknamed “Bloaters” by the RFC due to their bulky nose section, were supplied to operational squadrons by the end of the year. From March 1915, the B.E.8, alongside the B.E.2c, participated not only in reconnaissance flights but also in bombing raids against the enemy, showcasing its versatility on the front lines.
