STOL CH-701
The STOL CH 701 is a light, multipurpose aircraft developed in 1986 by Zenith Aircraft Company. Its design began in 1983, conceived exclusively as an aircraft for private operation, capable of taking off and landing on unprepared airstrips or even in their absence.
The Zenith STOL CH 701 was envisioned as a highly effective aircraft for use in Canada, where challenging terrain limits or prevents the use of conventional aircraft. This expectation proved accurate, making it an ideal choice for such environments. A primary goal during its creation was achieving exceptionally short take-off and landing distances, a challenge successfully met.
Unrivaled STOL Performance
The aircraft takes off after a run of just 36 meters from an unprepared grassy surface, or 27 meters from a hard surface. From a standstill, the aircraft needs only 4 seconds to become airborne. The STOL CH 701 was not conceived as “just another” light aircraft; its outstanding take-off and landing characteristics, all-metal fuselage, and unparalleled ease of assembly earned it the nickname “Sky Jeep.”
The Zenith STOL CH 701 is a versatile aircraft capable of transporting both two people and small cargo, which has been a major factor in its high popularity. Its first flight was in 1986, and due to its sufficiently simple design and high flight performance, which somewhat exceeded developers’ expectations, the project was launched into serial production and remains so today.
Versatility and Military Adoption
The cabin is designed for only two people. However, in place of a passenger, or alongside them, the aircraft can also transport a small amount of useful cargo, a feature that has found active application. Moreover, thanks to its dual controls, this aircraft can also be used as a training vehicle.
Beyond its private use, the STOL CH 701 has also found application in the military sector. The Indian military command showed interest in its operational capabilities, subsequently acquiring 85 aircraft of this model for local patrolling duties.
Technical Specifications and Kit Availability
The powerplant consists of a single piston aircraft engine installed in the front of the aircraft. Depending on the aircraft’s modification, piston engines ranging from 64 hp to 100 hp can be used, allowing the aircraft to reach a maximum speed of 165 km/h. The maximum range for the Zenith STOL CH 701 is 600 kilometers.
The STOL CH 701 is certified as a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) for use by FAA Sport Pilot / Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) category pilots. Assembling the aircraft from a complete kit requires 400 working hours, which equates to 20 weeks of 20 hours of work. The cost of a complete kit, without engine and delivery, is $10,795.
