Vladimir Egorovich Bizhko
Born on April 3, 1921, in the village of Zagryzovo, now Borovoy district, Kharkiv region, to a peasant family. He completed incomplete secondary school, two courses at a railway technical school, and an aeroclub in the city of Sloviansk, Donetsk region.
Service in the Red Army
He joined the Red Army in 1940. In 1943, he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School for Pilots. He was on the front lines from October 1943.
As a Guards Lieutenant and flight commander of the 92nd Guards Assault Aviation Regiment (4th Guards Assault Aviation Division, 5th Assault Aviation Corps, 5th Air Army, 2nd Ukrainian Front), Bizhko completed 143 combat sorties by May 1945. These missions included reconnaissance and ground attacks against railway echelons and enemy troop concentrations.
Combat Exploits and Reconnaissance
He destroyed dozens of vehicles, 12 tanks, 6 ammunition and fuel depots, 4 crossings, 5 anti-aircraft batteries, and approximately 50 locomotives and railway wagons.
Awards and Retirement
He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 15, 1946. His decorations include the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, two Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class, and various medals. From 1946, Major Bizhko was in the reserve. He later worked in Samara.
