Alexander Alexandrovich Bogachev

Born on December 11, 1922, in the village of Bolshoy Uzhin, Starorussky District, now Novgorod Oblast, to a peasant family. He joined the Navy (VMF) in 1940 and graduated from the Yeysk Naval Aviation School in 1943. From August 1943, he served in the active army.

Wartime Exploits in the Great Patriotic War

As Lieutenant Bogachev, a pilot of the 51st Mine-Torpedo Aviation Regiment, 8th Mine-Torpedo Aviation Division of the Baltic Fleet Air Force, he sank an enemy transport with a displacement of 12,000 tons during a cruising flight on October 12, 1944. Such a transport could carry over 6,000 tons of cargo or 200 medium tanks in a single voyage.

In total, the aviator torpedoed and sank three transports in long-range communications in the Baltic Sea, with a total displacement of 24,000 tons. For his services, on March 6, 1945, A. A. Bogachev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. His regiment was named the Tallinn Regiment and fought battles on the approaches to the ports of Liepaja, Ventspils, Klaipeda, Gdansk, and Baltiysk.

Post-War Life and Recognitions

From 1950, Senior Lieutenant Bogachev was in the reserve. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals. He died on August 12, 1978, and was buried in the city of Petrodvorets, Leningrad Oblast.
