Design and First Flight

The Bleriot 115 was a transport aircraft developed by the French firm Bleriot. This mixed-construction biplane was equipped with four Hispano-Suiza 8Ac engines, each producing 180 hp. The Bleriot 115’s passenger cabin could accommodate 8 people. Its maiden flight took place on May 9, 1923.

Despite the crash of the first prototype on June 23, 1923, three more aircraft were subsequently produced. This demonstrated the company’s commitment to advancing transport aviation during that era.

The African Expedition

Two of these aircraft, named “Roland Garros” and “Jean Casale,” were acquired by Colonel de Goys for an ambitious expedition across Africa. The journey was regrettably cut short in Niamey, Niger, after covering 4137 kilometers.

This interruption was due to the crash of the “Jean Casale,” which resulted in the death of the radio operator and severe injuries to both pilots. This incident marked an unfortunate chapter in the early history of long-distance aviation.

Later Variants

In 1924, two additional aircraft were manufactured. These later models were equipped with Hispano-Suiza 8Ab engines of the same power output. This improved variant was designated as the Bleriot 115 bis, possibly aiming for greater reliability or minor performance enhancements.
