Boeing Model 203

In 1929, the Boeing company began developing a low-power biplane for pilot training at its instruction center. The front cockpit accommodated two passengers, allowing the aircraft to be used for multi-purpose roles. This new aircraft, designated Boeing Model 203, was a single-strut biplane with wooden wings and fabric covering.

The fuselage structure and braced tail unit were welded from steel tubes. Five such aircraft were built; the first was equipped with a 145 hp (108 kW) Axelson radial engine, and the last three with 165 hp (123 kW) engines of the same brand. The second unit was assembled to the Model 203A standard and fitted with a Wright Whirlwind J-6-5 radial engine.

Development and Initial Variants

The first Model 203 made its maiden flight on July 1, 1929. All five aircraft were sent to the Boeing company’s flight school. Four of them were later upgraded to the Model 203A standard by installing Wright engines.

Additionally, two more Model 203A units were assembled directly at the school. In most machines, the tail skids were later replaced with wheels to improve ground handling and operational versatility.

Evolution for Advanced Training

The final designation, Model 204B, was assigned to four Model 203A aircraft after their conversion to the advanced flight training standard. These were equipped with 220 hp (164 kW) Avro Lycoming R-680 radial engines, incorporating more diverse equipment.

They also featured an opaque hood over the student’s cockpit for instrument flight training. These modifications highlighted a continuous commitment to innovation in pilot education and advanced aviation techniques.
