Richard Thompson’s Innovative Boxmoth

The Boxmoth is a unique light aircraft, conceptualized by the American designer Richard Thompson. Its prototype made its inaugural flight in 1972, marking the debut of an aircraft notable for its distinctive design.

This single-seat aircraft was characterized by its tandem-wing biplane configuration, an uncommon setup for its time. It was powered by a 55 hp piston engine, providing a light aviation solution for a single occupant.

Certification and Homebuilder Availability

In March 1973, the Boxmoth successfully achieved certification, receiving the registration number N64492. This validated the aircraft’s design and safety for operation.

On January 6, 1976, Thompson secured patent US39309624 for his original construction. Although the Boxmoth never entered series production, it was offered as kits of plans and detailed drawings, enabling aviation enthusiasts to build their own aircraft.
