Bristol 101

The Bristol Type 101 fighter was a private venture by the Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd., conceived as a mixed-construction biplane. It was powered by a 450 hp Bristol Jupiter VI engine. Initially, the aircraft was armed with two synchronized 7.7-mm Vickers machine guns and one movable twin Lewis machine gun of the same caliber, aiming for combat effectiveness. The maiden flight of this innovative aircraft took place on August 8, 1927.

A Promising Fighter’s Rejection

Despite its apparent advantages and advanced design for the era, the Bristol Type 101 was ultimately rejected by the UK Aviation Ministry. The primary reason cited was the aircraft’s extensive use of wooden components, which was deemed undesirable for future military specifications. This setback led Bristol to explore alternative roles for their prototype, transforming it from a military design into a civilian one.

From Fighter to Racer: A New Purpose

Unable to secure military orders, Bristol cleverly repurposed the two-seater fighter into a single-seater racing aircraft. This modified version was prominently displayed at the Copenhagen Aeronautical Exhibition in 1927, showcasing its potential in a different domain. The following year, piloted by Captain Uwins, the aircraft impressively secured second place in the prestigious King’s Cup Race, highlighting its speed and engineering quality in a competitive civilian arena.
