Brumby 600

In the early 2000s, the Australian company Brumby Aircraft Australia began developing the Brumby 600 light sport aircraft. Phil Goard served as the project’s chief designer.

Origins and Design

This new aircraft was based on the two-seat GoAir GT-1 Trainer, produced by Goair Products (Sydney, Australia) in the mid-1990s. The first flight of the Brumby 600 took place in October 2005.

Technical Features and Capabilities

The Brumby 600 (or Brumby LSA 600) is an all-metal, low-wing monoplane featuring tricycle landing gear (either classic or with a nose wheel) and a side-by-side cockpit configuration. The pilot’s cabin is equipped with a sliding canopy, and two upward-opening “gull-wing” doors are available as an option.

The aircraft can be fitted with 100-116 hp Lycoming IO-233 engines, 100 hp Rotax 912ULS, or 120 hp Jabiru 3300 engines, all driving a two-blade wooden propeller. Its maximum takeoff weight is 600 kg (empty weight is 330 kg). The instrumentation allows for day and night flights under visual flight rules.

Global Expansion and Production

In 2019, Brumby Aircraft signed a $50 million contract with the Chinese conglomerate AVIC. This agreement involves establishing a joint venture in the People’s Republic of China for the production of two-seat light sport aircraft models, the Brumby 600 and 610. The factory, boasting a working area of 10,000 square meters, will be located in Fujian province, in eastern China.

The 40-year deal envisions the production of 280 aircraft within the first four years of the plant’s operation. All aircraft will be supplied to the local market and used as trainers. For the Australian and New Zealand markets, aircraft will be assembled in Australia from Chinese-made components, where engines, avionics, and interiors will be installed.
