Bu.182 Kornett

Developed concurrently with the Bu.181 Bestmann, the Bücker Flugzeugbau design bureau created the single-seat trainer aircraft Bu.182 Kornett. This aircraft was specifically intended for training fighter and dive bomber pilots. During its development, significant attention was paid to high flight characteristics and low operating costs.

Early Development and Prototype

The first prototype, designated Bu.181A (sic), took to the skies in late 1938. It was a single-seat, low-wing monoplane of mixed construction with a monocoque fuselage, powered by a Czechoslovakian Walter Mikron II engine producing 60 hp. For training in dive bombing techniques, bomb racks for four 1.5-kilogram bombs were placed under the wings.

Following successful trials, four more aircraft, the Bu.182B and Bu.182C, were completed. These featured four-cylinder Bücker BU M 700 engines, delivering 80 hp. It was anticipated that the Bu.182C version would become the production model.

Rejection and Final Fate

However, the RLM (Reich Air Ministry) rejected the aircraft. They argued that the Luftwaffe already possessed a sufficient number of training aircraft, even if they were not as specialized as the Kornett.

Tragically, in 1943, all constructed aircraft were destroyed as a result of an Allied bomber raid.
