Caudron C.490

In 1935, the Caudron company released a new training aircraft designated C.490. It was developed as a modernized variant of the C.59 and was a two-seat, two-bay biplane of mixed construction.

This aircraft was equipped with a Renault 4Pfi engine, delivering 170 hp. The aircraft’s maiden flight took place in September 1935, initiating its testing phase.

Development and Initial Trials

Following successful trials, a trial series of six C.490 aircraft was ordered. However, no further orders were placed for this specific version of the aircraft.

Variants and Production

Despite the lack of additional orders for the C.490, six units of the C.491 modification were commissioned. This variant differed primarily by featuring a Renault 4Pdi engine, which provided a more powerful 180 hp.
