Caudron C.510 Pelican

The four-seater Caudron C.510 Pelican monoplane was a logical continuation of the successful C.280 Pfalene line of sport aircraft. Its production began in the autumn of 1934, with its first flight in September of the same year, and a total of 63 units were manufactured.

Design and Versatile Applications

While almost indistinguishable externally from its predecessors, the C.510 received simpler landing gear and minor structural improvements. A key feature was its elongated fuselage, which allowed the medical evacuation variant to carry one wounded person on a stretcher and an accompanying medic.

In its tourist configuration, the C.510 was designed for a pilot and three passengers. The wing and fuselage structure were practically identical to its predecessor, although the ailerons, fin, and rudder were new and had increased dimensions. Upon customer request, the manufacturer could install dual controls for a pilot and a cadet or trainee.

Operational History and Legacy

Most of the aircraft remained in France, but several examples were sold to international customers. These C.510s were operated in medical evacuation roles, while others in tourist configuration were privately owned. At the beginning of World War II, a number of C.510s were mobilized by the French Air Force command.

After the defeat of France, some C.510s fell into German hands, who used them in secondary roles. One aircraft, originally sold to the Belgian Congo, was requisitioned for military needs and served as a liaison aircraft until 1945.
