Development and First Flights

The “Caudron” firm’s new variant of a fighter with retractable landing gear was designated C.713. By the end of 1937, two prototypes of this aircraft were ready. The first was converted from a C.710, retaining its factory number (7536) but receiving a new serial number (001).

The second prototype (serial number 01, factory number 7537) was newly built. Both machines began testing in late 1937: machine 01 was first flown by R. Delmotte on December 14, and Maurice Ducros flew 001 on December 27.

Soviet Interest and Acquisition

Although there was no order from the French Air Force, the light fighter attracted interest from the USSR, which had previously acquired a C.690 for study. In 1937, negotiations were held regarding the purchase of three C.713s.

Ultimately, one C.710 (factory number 7871) and one C.713 (7182) were ordered. However, during construction, the Soviet side cancelled the acquisition of the C.710—a reasonable decision, as the C.713 was a more advanced design.

Study and Final Fate

The “Soviet” C.713 was first flown by Roger Yanin on July 26, 1938. After delivery to the USSR, the aircraft was transferred for study to Factory No. 156, under the supervision of designer Dubrovin, who was involved in creating a “high-speed interceptor and air superiority fighter.”

The “rejected” C.710 (7871) was also completed and took to the air three days before the “Soviet” C.713. This machine was subsequently used for armament testing and was captured by the Germans at Orly-en-Brie airfield in June 1940.
