In 1967, the design of an elongated version of the Model 206D began, intended for carrying seven, rather than six, people. Changes in the airframe’s size and shape were emphasized by the aircraft’s new designation, Cessna Model 207 Skywagon, later changed to Skywagon 7. The wingspan and fuselage length were increased, but the initial powerplant remained the IO-520 engine producing 285 hp (213 kW).

The Model 207 prototype made its first flight on May 11, 1968. This aircraft was not considered the most aesthetically pleasing, which negatively affected sales volume, with only 362 units sold. In 1969, the turbocharged Model T207 Skywagon was introduced, equipped with a Continental TSIO-520-G engine of 300 hp, alongside a non-turbo Model 207 with a 300 hp IO-520-F engine.

Evolution and Naming Conventions

Minor changes were introduced to the Model 207’s design in subsequent years. In 1977, a new variant, the Model 207A (426 aircraft), was fitted with a propeller of increased diameter. In 1978, the company’s aircraft lineup underwent a revision: aircraft with conventional IO-520-F engines were renamed Stationair 7, and those with turbocharged TSIO-520-M engines (310 hp) became Turbo Stationair 7.

By 1980, an eighth passenger seat was added to the aircraft, and these increased-capacity variants were consequently renamed Stationair 8 and Turbo Stationair 8. The Model 207 held a unique position as the only strut-braced high-wing Cessna not certified for operation with float landing gear.

Third-Party Modifications and Production End

Based on the basic Model 207 variants, “third-party” companies, most notably Soloy Corporation, developed several turboprop conversion models. Despite these aftermarket developments, serial production of the Cessna Model 207 officially ceased in 1985, marking the end of its manufacturing run.
