Cessna C-106 Loadmaster

In 1943, the American aircraft manufacturer Cessna proactively developed the P-260 project, a light transport aircraft for the U.S. Army Air Forces. This project represented a modified version of the C/UC-78 transport, adapted for more powerful engines. The C-106 Loadmaster was designed with a tubular steel fuselage covered in fabric and semi-monocoque wooden wings, combining materials for a light yet sturdy structure.

For its powerplant, two air-cooled Pratt & Whitney R-1340 radial engines were chosen, each boasting 600 hp (450 kW) and fitted with two-bladed propellers. This configuration promised robust performance for the transport duties it was intended to undertake.

Successful Trials and Production Prospects

During 1943, two prototypes were built for evaluation tests: the C-160 (NX24176) with R-1340-S3H1 engines and the C-160A (NX44600) with R-1340-AN-2. These prototypes underwent rigorous military trials, where the aircraft received very positive reviews for its performance and reliability.

Due to its successful results, the C-106 Loadmaster was recommended for series production. Towards the end of 1943, a preliminary contract was signed for the manufacture of 500 units, indicating great confidence in Cessna’s design.

A Promising Project Thwarted

Despite the initial enthusiasm and the substantial order, a shortage of plywood, an essential material for its construction, prevented Cessna from commencing mass production. This factor, common during the war years, ultimately thwarted the widespread deployment of a highly promising light transport aircraft capable of handling up to 1100 kg of cargo.
