Gunter Bahr

Early Career and the Eastern Front

Gunter Bahr was born on July 18, 1921, in Neu-Leegden. In 1941, he served as an instructor at Zerstörerschule 1 for approximately one year. On December 19, 1941, he was transferred to 6./SKG 210, renamed 6./ZG 1 on January 4, 1942, on the Soviet-German front. He achieved his first victory on March 4, 1942, shooting down an R-5, and by the end of March 1942, he began retraining as a night fighter pilot.

Becoming a Night Fighter Ace

He initially fought with I./NJG 1, and from July 1943, with 4., 8., and 12./NJG 4. Bahr scored his first night victory on the night of August 24, when he shot down an RAF Stirling over Berlin. By the end of 1943, he had already accumulated 10 victories.

War Record and Recognition

Oberfeldwebel Bahr was awarded the Ritterkreuz on March 28 for his 37 victories. He ended the war serving with 7./NJG 6. In total, throughout the war, he achieved 37 victories, 34 of which were at night, in 90 combat sorties.
