Hans-Joachim Birkner

Hans-Joachim Birkner was born on October 22, 1921, in Schönwalde. After completing his pilot training in the summer of 1943, he was assigned to Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52) on the Eastern Front. He flew his first combat sortie on August 30 of that year and achieved his first aerial victory on his 54th sortie on October 1. By the end of the year, he had already accumulated a total of 24 victories, often achieving 3 or 4 kills in a single day.
Rise of a Combat Ace
On July 27, 1944, Hans-Joachim Birkner was awarded the Knight’s Cross for achieving his 98th victory. He frequently flew in formation alongside two of the most renowned aces, Günther Rall (275 victories) and Erich Hartmann (352 victories), an experience that undoubtedly shaped his skill and fortitude in combat. On October 1, 1944, he was promoted to Staffelkapitän (squadron commander) of 9./JG 52.
A Hundred Victories and Legacy
During October 1944, Birkner added 18 more victories to his record, including his 100th on October 14. His combat career came to a tragic end on December 14, 1944, when he died during a forced landing in his Bf 109 G-14 (W.Nr. 510 531). At the time of his death, Hans-Joachim Birkner had achieved 117 victories in 284 combat sorties, 121 of which resulted in aerial engagements.
