Valentin Romanovich Buchavy

Early Life and Military Training

Valentin Romanovich Buchavy was born on July 20, 1919, in the village of Levaya Rossosh, now in the Kashirsky district of the Voronezh region, into a peasant family. He completed his education at an FZU school (Factory-Plant Apprenticeship School) and worked as a fitter at a factory in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region.

He joined the Red Army in 1939. In 1940, he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School for Pilots.

Service in the Great Patriotic War

With the onset of the war, Buchavy was sent to the front. As Deputy Squadron Commander of the 34th Bomber Aviation Regiment (301st Bomber Aviation Division, 3rd Bomber Aviation Corps, 16th Air Army, 1st Belorussian Front), Senior Lieutenant Buchavy completed 222 combat sorties by the end of the war.

These missions included reconnaissance and bombing of railway junctions and echelons, as well as concentrations of enemy manpower and equipment.

Awards and Later Life

On May 15, 1946, Valentin Buchavy was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He was decorated with the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Order of the Red Star, and several medals.

In 1945, he graduated from the Higher Officer Flight-Tactical Courses. From 1955, Captain Buchavy was in the reserve. He tragically died on February 14, 1958, and is buried in Lipetsk.
