Heroic Encounter of September 1942
Born in 1914, Lieutenant Georgy Nikolaevich Chilikov served as a flight commander in the 255th Fighter Aviation Regiment, part of the 5th Bomber Aviation Brigade of the Northern Fleet Air Force. On September 27, 1942, Chilikov led a flight of four LaGG-3 fighters, scrambled on alert.
Near Cape Mishukova, Soviet pilots intercepted 10 Ju-87 bombers and immediately engaged them. The enemy responded with fierce defensive fire. Chilikov quickly reorganized his flight, attacking the enemy in pairs from two directions. Chilikov and his wingman, Kharlamov, targeted the leading “Junkers,” successfully shooting down one bomber with accurate fire. The remaining enemy aircraft dropped their bombs and turned back.
Unequal Battle and Aerial Ramming
At this critical moment, a group of 16 Me-109 fighters emerged from the clouds, forcing the Soviet pilots into an unequal battle. Chilikov quickly locked onto the nearest “Messerschmitt” in his sights and shot it down with a short burst. With his ammunition expended, Chilikov made the courageous decision to perform an aerial ramming attack.
He swiftly caught up with one of the “Messerschmitts” and severed its wing console. Although his own aircraft was severely damaged, Chilikov attempted an emergency landing but was unsuccessful. He then deployed his parachute, landing safely within the location of an anti-aircraft battery.
A Sacrifice for Victory
Despite surviving the ramming and parachute jump, Lieutenant Chilikov succumbed to his wounds, dying in the arms of the anti-aircraft gunners who rescued him. For his exceptional bravery and sacrifice, Georgy Nikolaevich Chilikov was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin, cementing his legacy as a hero of the Soviet Union.
