Cicada

Posted on March 6, 2026 By

The Cicada is a light agricultural aircraft, designed and manufactured by OOO “Hydroplane” in Samara, Russia. This off-aerodrome based aircraft was engineered by designers E. Yungerov and V. Neizvestnykh for field operation and maintenance, featuring a strengthened cabin that reliably protects the pilot. Constructed from fiberglass composites, it is resistant to aggressive environments and suitable for tropical conditions.

Robust Design and Versatility

This two-seater aircraft includes a cargo compartment, hermetically sealed from the cockpit, where a 180-liter chemical tank can be installed. It features a reinforced tricycle landing gear made from readily available materials, with a steerable front strut. The Cicada can be equipped with two “Rotax-582” engines, or optionally, one “Rotax-912S” or two “Rotax-912” engines, or other engines of similar mass and power. The chemical tank capacity can be increased with more powerful engines.

Under the wing, provisions are made for installing chemical equipment for low-volume liquid component spraying with 6 nozzles, spanning 10.5 meters between the outer ones. With this equipment, the aircraft can be effectively used in agriculture for crop dusting. Operations during the 1998 season demonstrated high economic efficiency, with an hourly productivity of 170-250 hectares of treated crops and a spraying width of 22-30 meters.

Operational Efficiency and Multi-role Capabilities

The Cicada easily converts from a chemical to a passenger variant, making it suitable for transporting specialists to remote work sites lacking roads, delivering urgent cargo up to 150-200 kg, and supporting communication or search and rescue operations. Dual controls can also be installed for pilot training. The possibility of installing aerial photography equipment and a compact thermal imager for environmental monitoring is currently being explored.

Its low operating cost makes it highly effective for patrolling gas pipelines, oil pipelines, and power lines. The aircraft and engines require no more than 2 hours of maintenance per week, and the hourly cost of fuel and lubricants is less than $13 USD.

Customization and Support

Our company typically accommodates customer requests for aircraft modernization based on special orders and the installation of additional equipment. A single set of spare parts and materials can be supplied with the aircraft.
