In mid-1911, the small British company Walton & Edwards Aeroplane Co., based in Brooklands, began constructing a light aircraft. This aeroplano was named the Walton-Edwards Colossoplane, also known as the Elephantoplane.
Unique Design and Features
It was a single-seater, two-strut biplane, powered by a 100 hp Clerget engine. This powerplant drove both a pulling and a pushing propeller.
The main “highlight” of its design was its variable balance. This could be adjusted by shifting the engine and the pilot’s seat forwards and backwards, allowing for unique adaptability.
Maiden Flight and Test Cessation
The Colossoplane made its maiden flight on September 25, 1911. The airplane flew until December of the same year, after which testing was discontinued.
