Boeing Model 7 (BB-1)

Boeing Model 7 (BB-1)

Following the B-1, another flying boat, the BB-1 (Boeing Model 7), emerged, built on the same design but slightly smaller. This aircraft could also transport two passengers. However, unlike the B-1, which featured separate passenger and pilot cabins, the BB-1 accommodated both pilot and passengers within a single, shared cockpit.

Unique Design Features

A distinctive construction feature was its interplane struts, which were V-shaped when viewed from the front. Such a design solution was a rarity in American aircraft manufacturing practice. The aircraft was powered by a 130 hp Hall-Scott L-4 engine.

Production and Legacy

As with the B-1, only a single example (serial No. 87) of the BB-1 was built. It successfully completed its maiden flight on January 7, 1920. Subsequently, this unique flying boat was sold to the Canadian company, “Aircraft Manufacturing Company of Vancouver.”
