French Aviation Ministry Requirements

In 1918, the French Ministry of Aviation published requirements for the A2 specification, a two-seat reconnaissance aircraft. Specifically, the scout aircraft was expected to reach a speed of 200 km/h and have a practical ceiling of 7000 meters.

The Carroll A2 was developed to meet these requirements. It was a two-seat, two-bay biplane, equipped with a 240 hp Lorraine-Dietrich 8Bb engine.

Technical Specifications of the Carroll A2

It was intended that production aircraft would receive a 7.7-mm machine gun on a movable turret, installed in the rear observer’s cockpit. However, no armament was installed on the prototype.

Comparative Trials and Project’s Fate

In the same year, the aircraft was submitted for comparative trials, conducted alongside the Breguet 14A and LeO 2 aircraft. The Breguet was chosen as the winner of the competition, and the Carroll A2 project received no further development.
