Development and International Collaboration

In 1965, the government of West Germany also joined the project, broadening its international scope. Initially, 282 units of this advanced reconnaissance system were ordered. The CL-89 was equipped with a Zeiss KRb 8/24C reconnaissance camera, which for night operations, was replaced by a Vinten Type 201 IRLS system utilizing illuminating rockets.

Operational Capabilities

The UAV was launched from a platform using a rocket booster that provided a thrust of 22.24 kN. This system was effectively deployed by UK forces, specifically the Drone Troop of 57th Locating Battery, 32nd Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery, during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf.

Designations and Service

Beyond its original designation, the UAV was known as “Midge” in British service and AN/USD-501 under NATO classification. The CL-89 also saw active service with the armies of Germany, Canada, Italy, and France. In total, over 500 UAVs were built, comprising 20 complexes with 40 launchers.
