Avid Aircraft Inc., founded in Caldwell, Idaho, began producing kits for home assembly of light aircraft. Its first product was the two-seat Flyer. In 1994, the company introduced the Avid Catalina amphibian, which was a further development of the Avid Amphibian model. The prototype’s first flight took place the following year.
Development and Key Features
The Avid Catalina is a two- or three-seat braced high-wing monoplane, equipped with a two-cylinder, two-stroke Rotax 582 engine generating 65 hp (48 kW), with a two-bladed propeller.
Alternative powerplants include the Rotax 618, Rotax 912, Hirth F30, Hirth 2706, or Verner 133MK engines.
Home-Build Kits and Sales
The Avid Champion aircraft was offered to buyers as a kit for self-assembly. By 2003, more than 100 kits had been sold.
