The Cessna 525A Citation CJ2 is an administrative aircraft, a light business jet, developed by the American firm Cessna Aircraft Company. Its design commenced in May 1998, with prototype assembly starting in August of the same year.
The new model was officially unveiled at the NBAA conference in Las Vegas on October 18, 1998. In November 1998, Cessna began testing the FJ44-2C engine on a modified Cessna Citation S/II, along with the new Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics, which logged over 300 hours on the CitationJet.
Testing and Certification
The CJ2 prototype first flew on April 26, 1999, unpainted, followed by ground vibration tests. A second aircraft, conforming to industrial standards and intended for autopilot testing, was completed on October 15. By November 1999, these two aircraft had accumulated over 400 flight hours.
Certification for this aircraft was slated for May 2000, with initial deliveries to customers commencing in 2001.
Enhanced Features
Cessna promoted the Citation CJ2 as “a bigger, faster CitationJet variant specifically designed for the needs of a large market.” Its main advantages include “high cruising speed, a more spacious cabin, greater range, and the latest aviation technologies.”
It was also important that “parameters such as simplicity and reliability in operation were maintained.” Key differences from the Citation Jet 1 include: a longer cabin (increased by 89 cm) and tail cone (43 cm), now featuring six windows on each side, and a larger wingspan (90 cm more).
Additionally, the empennage volume increased by 15 percent and was angled by 15 degrees. It incorporates a new Williams-Rolls FJ44-2C engine providing 21% more thrust than the FJ44-1A on the CitationJet. It also features Collins Pro Line 21 avionics with two active liquid crystal displays.
