Irish engineer Joseph Cordner built his first aeroplane in 1909 in Northern Ireland. Named Cordner No.1, this single-seater wooden aircraft was a cantilever mid-wing monoplane, equipped with a 40 hp eight-cylinder JAP engine and a two-bladed wooden propeller.
Pioneering Design and Development
The machine’s tests took place in late 1909 and early 1910. These trials were conducted along the Lough Swilly coastline in Lisfannon, near Buncrana, County Donegal.
Successful Trials and Future Endeavors
Following the successful completion of these tests, Cordner proceeded to create his second aircraft, solidifying his early contributions to aviation.
